University of Michigan Position Announcement

The goal of the Center for Interprofessional Education (CIPE) in Health Sciences at the University of Michigan (https://interprofessional.umich.edu/) is to transform the preparation of U-M students through interprofessional education, practice and research. The CIPE achieves its goals through curriculum and faculty development, clinical innovation and research in cross-disciplinary domains that align and integrate needs across the health professions. The CIPE at U-M was established in 2015 with the goal to reach the over 5,000 students in health professions at the university.

In the 2019-2020 academic year alone, the CIPE enrolled over three thousand students in over 30 curricular offerings and engaged over three hundred faculty members. It has hosted a research stimulus program that focused on innovative interprofessional practice approaches and on the interprofessional educational outcomes. The CIPE affiliates regularly collaborate in several publications and funded research each year.

The Director of the U-M Center for Interprofessional Education (CIPE) in Health Sciences will provide a clear vision and leadership for interprofessional practice, education, and research that builds a knowledge base for interprofessional health care practice among U-M’s ten health sciences schools and colleges (including those on the Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn campuses). The director will be responsible for planning, supporting and evolving an innovative faculty-engaged interprofessional practice curriculum. In addition, the director will lead a planning process for research and implementation that will build on our knowledge of interprofessional practice. The director will expand UM’s role as an innovative national leader in interprofessional practice and education. The CIPE director will identify and implement innovation, research, and program development goals in consultation with the Health Sciences Council and its representatives in the CIPE’s executive committee, the Provost’s Office, and other CIPE’s key stakeholders. The director will also collaborate with leaders at Michigan Medicine and the U-M Health System on education and research on innovative models of care that health system leaders are developing. Finally, the director will be responsible for seeking and securing funding to support the CIPE’s mission of research, education, and innovation.

The Position

  • The CIPE director is expected to devote 50% effort to this position. The director will retain a base 50% appointment in their unit (including tenure, if applicable).
  • The appointment term is 5 years, with reappointment possible.
  • The director reports to the Health Sciences Council Chair and to the Vice Provost for Engaged Learning.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Ensures a dynamic strategic vision and plan for interprofessional education and research at the university.
  • Leads and manages the budget and staff of the Center.
  • Provides leadership in interprofessional curricular initiatives for the ten health sciences schools and colleges across all three U-M campuses.
  • Leads program innovation, research, and new program development in line with the mission of U-M CIPE, and in collaboration with the Health Sciences Council and the Provost’s Office.
  • Engages Health Sciences faculty in the goals and mission of IPE.
  • Leads a research program on IPE in collaboration with health sciences faculty.
  • Spearheads grant applications and publications on interprofessional health care in collaboration with health sciences faculty.
  • Presents collaborative work on IPE at national and international conferences.
  • Identifies and establishes collaborative opportunities with external IPE initiatives, including the Big Ten forum, and other health sciences entities.

Candidate Qualifications

The candidate chosen for this position must be a member of the instructional or clinical faculty at the University of Michigan, in health sciences, and have accomplishments to allow appointment at the rank of associate or full professor (including a strong reputation as an educator and researcher with significant scholarly accomplishments in health care).

The ideal candidate will have the capacity to lead innovation and change across disciplines and professions. The director will bring knowledge of interprofessional education and practice across health sciences, including the ability to collaborate with leadership at the UM Health System, whose charge is to create and implement excellent health care. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in:

  • Interprofessional education and practice;
  • High-quality teaching and research experience in a university setting;
  • Curriculum development and education;
  • Collaboration across health sciences disciplines;
  • Scholarly accomplishment in health sciences, with knowledge in interprofessional education and practice preferred.

In addition, the successful candidate should have a demonstrated record of increasing leadership experience, have professional experience relevant and commensurate to the role, and a strong commitment to the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the university.

Center for Interprofessional Education Director Search: Nominations Are Encouraged

An advisory committee to assist with the internal search for the next Director of the Center for Interprofessional Education has been formed. On February 11, 2021 the Chair of the Health Sciences Council, School of Public Health Dean DuBois Bowman, charged the committee members to present an unranked slate of recommended candidates at the end of their process.
