The University of Michigan is starting a new COVID-19 testing program, and there is an opportunity for students to volunteer to assist in this important work. The Palmer Commons main campus testing site opens Thursday, Sept. 10. Shifts are available through the hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. This initiative is a partnership among the School of Public Health, the University Health Service, and Michigan Medicine. Assistance is needed for day-to-day operations of the U-M COVID-19 Sampling & Tracking Program testing site at Palmer Commons. This program is designed to systematically sample the campus community for early identification of changes in virus spread. After initial sign-up, a sample of participants will be selected on a rolling basis and invited to schedule an appointment at Palmer Commons to self-collect a nasal swab for SARS-CoV-2 testing. Participants are required to be symptom-free and without known COVID-19 exposure at the time of testing.
At the testing center, students will complete participant check-in and collection kit distribution, including verifying participant identity and labeling each swab kit. The on-site team will also be responsible for observing specimen self-collection, coordinating participant flow throughout the testing center, and delivering specimens to University Health Service for pickup by courier throughout the day. Personal Protective Equipment including surgical mask and face shield will be provided at each shift.
Preferred eligibility: Graduate students in a U-M health sciences school or junior/senior in public health or related degree program, but any U-M student is welcome to apply. Elective credit and/or Applied Practice Experience (APEx) for public health students may be available.
